Potty training is a big milestone for both kids and parents! Teaching our children how to use the toilet independently is an important skill, but as Muslims, we also want to incorporate Islamic teachings. This guide provides helpful tips for potty training while introducing simple duas and good bathroom manners from an Islamic perspective.

Step 1: Teach the Importance of Cleanliness
In Islam, cleanliness is half of faith, so it’s essential to start by explaining the value of staying clean. Begin by introducing the concept of taharah (purity), and encourage children to always keep themselves clean after using the toilet.
Step 2: Introduce the Dua Before Entering the Toilet
Teaching the Dua Before Entering the Toilet is a great way to help kids understand that every activity, even using the bathroom, begins with Allah’s guidance and protection.
Dua Before Entering:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ
Transliteration: Allahumma inni a’udhu bika minal khubuthi wal khabaa’ith
Translation: “O Allah, I seek refuge with You from evil and bad things.”
Encourage your child to say this dua before they enter, reminding them that it keeps them safe.
Step 3: Practice Good Bathroom Manners
Teach kids the basics of Islamic bathroom etiquette:
- Enter with the Left Foot: Remind your child to enter the bathroom with their left foot and cover their head.
- Avoid Talking: Explain that the toilet is a place for quiet, so they should avoid speaking unnecessarily.
- Use the Left Hand for Cleaning: Teach kids to use their left hand for cleaning themselves after using the toilet with tissue and water.
- Flush and Wash Hands: Remind them always to flush the toilet and wash their hands with soap, making it a habit to stay clean.
Step 4: Say the Dua After Leaving
Once your child is done, they can say the Dua After Leaving the Toilet as a way to ask for forgiveness and thank Allah.
Dua After Leaving:
غُفْرَانَكَ، اَلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَذْهَبَ عَنِّي الْأَذَى وَعَافَانِي
Transliteration: Ghufranak, Alhamdulillahilladhi adh-haba ‘annil adha wa ‘aafani
Translation: “I ask for Your forgiveness, O Allah. Praise be to Allah who relieved me of harm and gave me health.”
Encourage them to leave the bathroom with their right foot.
Step 5: Use a Potty Reward Chart
Reward charts can make potty training fun and motivational! You can download our Potty Reward Chart to track your child’s progress, reinforcing the good habits they learn. Every time they remember a dua or practice good manners, reward them with a sticker or small reward!
